Given that they are so common, bleachers are often taken for granted for their use and charm.  Even given their long running use, a lot of people do not care at all where they came from or the colorful history associated with them.  These seats will more than likely never go away, even though they have been around for a very long time and have not changed much.

In order to support the large amount of fans that would attend events, seats that are tiered were invented.  Since baseball, football as well as other sports became increasingly popular through the years, there were a lot of people that wanted to be present at the games.  There was a dilemma for smaller teams since they often were not able to build a stadium structure.  Sitting on the soil or in seats made it very difficult to see what was going on, and people in the way did not help either.

Tiered seats were initially made using solid wood.  The seats would eventually sit outdoors all day and be worn out by the weather and sun.  The color would eventually come out of the wood because of the sun, similar to bleach in clothes.  In the beginning the term did not only apply to seats but people too, but the term bleacher was then derived.  The term even stayed long after the bleachers were created out of aluminum, which sidestepped splinters and made for a stronger seating area.

Bleachers also have terms and symbolism associated with them given their widespread adoption.  The underparts were usually entirely hollow, but a lot of bleachers were also put on the tops of buildings, housing rooms beneath.  ”Under the bleachers” was the phrase associated with doing publicly undesirable things in the hollow parts of loaded bleachers.  The split between bad and good in the high school years can be defined as bleacher for the kids that are regarded as innocent.

Today, there are various types of bleachers that one can take a seat on.  Bleachers that pull out from a wall or sit totally flush when stored are classified as folding bleachers.  Permanent sporting areas normally have immobile bleacher structures that are usually substantial.  Portable bleachers are much more common, since they can be attached to an area or moved around so the area can be rearranged or improved.  With respect to the place they are used, wood, aluminum, plastic and even a combination are used for bleachers, since many areas and scales of the setup do not require extremely resistant materials.
